The National Folk Museum was originally founded in 1924 by a Japanese philosopher-- Yanagi Soetsu. He founded the mingei (folk craft) movement in Japan. Originally called the Korean Folk Crafts Museum, it was renamed to "The National Folk Museum of Korea" by US Forces in 1945. It was also moved from Mt. Namsan to its current location near Gyeongbokgung in 1975.
